Technology Transfer

One of our region’s most important assets is our thirteen colleges and universities. In an effort to strengthen Northeastern Pennsylvania’s economy, NPTI is implementing a regional technology transfer strategy.

The premise is that each school by itself doesn’t create enough intellectual property to warrant a technology transfer office. However, collectively our members do research that should produce innovative ideas. As a result, NPTI developed a memorandum of understanding with the Penn State University Intellectual Property Office to develop a system that assists a faculty member in the transition from “aahhh, I have an idea” to “great, now we can generate revenue and possibly create a company”.

Penn State University’s Intellectual Property office will develop Intellectual Property from our membership in a four step process:

  1. Assess the market for the Intellectual Property
  2. Develop a protection strategy for the Intellectual Property (patents, licensing strategies)
  3. Market the technology
  4. Negotiate agreements (Confidential Disclosure, Materials Transfer, Options, Licensing agreements)
